List Love Book Club: Ouch!

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Book with a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today’s Topic: List your biggest moments in pain

This is not so much a list as a grand tribute to the endurance of my childhood self. When I was about 10 I had a tooth pulled out, without novacaine. I repeat, I had a tooth pulled without painkillers.

Why you ask?

It was a combination of a fresh-out-of-college dentist and a freak infection that rendered novacaine useless in the face of it's reign of terror.

I was screaming so loudly that everyone else left the office. I imagine that my mother was cowering in the waiting room in the fetal position. A week later the dentist called in tears to check up on me and confessing that she had been suffering guilty nightmares ever since my extraction. A few hours after the event I was totally fine and to this day I have no fear of dentists because I am badass.

As an adult I've found out that pulling teeth is a common form of torture. When I saw Sydney Bristow approached by a sadistic "dentist" on Alias I just nodded my head in compassion "It'll hurt Syd, but you'll make it through".

What about you? I hope that none of you can top me(although childbirth sounds quite harrowing as well). Bloggers can link up at

List Love Book Club: Wish List

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Book with a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today’s Topic: List some things you want for your kitchen and living room

I'm of mixed opinions regarding wish lists. On the one hand I love making them and on the other hand I feel like sometimes it just leads to consumerism type obsession. Am I the only one who wories about that?

That said. Yeah, of course I have a list.

  1. Cake server. - For all my cake talk I don't have a cake server. Dahlia recently have to intervene when she saw me chopping up a cake with my spatula. She was like, "Crap Emily, at least use your bread knife."
  2. New Loveseat-I look at my poor defenseless couch with hate in my eyes, it's received a little too much attention from Nutella over the years.
  3. New Kitchen Floor-Our current floor is fake-brick linoleum covered in paint spatters with the added addition of raised/split seams. So pretty!
  4. Curtains for the Living Room-The ones we have currently aren't long enough. Clas-sy!
  5. Curtains for the kitchen sink window.-Arnold swears the reflected light off the sink is blinding him. BLINDING HIM!
What about you? Are you wishing for a cake server or a new floor? Do you have wish list angst/guilt like me? Leave 'em in the comments or head over to Torrie's.

List Love Book Club-Budgeting Basics

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Book with a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today’s Topic: List some ideas for trimming back your budget

I have so many opinions and ideas about budgeting that I don't even know where to start!? Today I'll keep it simple though, here's how we live the luxe life on public-servant salaries.

  1. Haircuts-The boys cut their own hair and I cut mine 3-4 times a year. It saves beacoup money.
  2. Meat-With the exception of the Bayless project we rarely eat meat at home. This frees us up to buy more pricey (and better tasting) organic veggies etc without breaking the bank.
  3. Nix Cable-It's well known that I heart TV, but I don't have cable. We have an antennae that we fastened to the top of our house, Netflix and a Tivo. For $25 a month we are more than able to fill our couch-potato calendar
  4. Booze-We throw a lot of parties and there is absolutely no way that we could have get-togethers of 20+ people on a weekly basis if we provided drinks at every fete. We make BYOB a policy except for special occasions. My friends don't care, they still come over (with beer) every week happy as clams.
  5. Coffee-Make it at home, duh.
  6. Happy Hour-On Wednesday nights we eat out at a local restaurant. We eat off the Happy Hour menu and get dinner for 3 for less than $15. It's a nice break for us in the middle of the week and the savings mean we get to hop over to Ginger's afterwards for cookies. :)
  7. Allowance-It's easy to have a short memory on your spending. The week you buy something "Oh so expensive!" Three weeks later, "What? Did I get a new shirt?" H and I get "allowance" once a month and when it's gone, it's gone. It's a great way to see the cause-effect of your individual spending more clearly. I brown-bagged it for months to buy the New Kids concert tix and I'll be doing it again to save up to go to next years Mighty Camp. Worth it, cause in the end budgeting is about priorities.

Alright internet focus group how do you save money? I am very curious! Let's crowd-source our way into better budgets. I've got the link!

  1. My friend Marilyn's Thai chicken
  2. S'mores
  3. Real Guacamole
  4. Fresh Tortillas
  5. Lumpia
  6. Colombian Hot Dogs
  7. Shade
  8. Strawberry Limade
  9. Somewhere to swim
  10. Fruits and Veggies (to mitigate the damage)
  11. Something with cilantro on top.

I see now that my list is a bit bizarre and oddly specific. What about you guys? What do you want to eat at Barbeques? Danielle's got the link or you can leave your suggestions in the comments!

  1. Landscape our Yard<– We have half a deck in half a year. Check!
  2. Go on a date with Arnold each month-In Progress. Six dates and counting!
  3. Finish the “Emily Bayless” Project <—Almost there! Have been a "little engine that could cook" in the kitchen
  4. Visit my Grandma more<--In progress. In fact we'll see her this weekend!
  5. Run in the 100th Anniversary Bay to Breakers<—DONE!
  6. Attend BlogHer 2011 <--I signed up and paid and I'm going!

Wow, this list was proving to be quite painful. There are lots of funny TV Dads but I was having trouble coming up with a favorite and then I remembered!

Jack Bristow from Alias-or as I an the Internet like to call him "Spy Daddy" He's socially awkward, mean to your boyfriends and oh yeah, a secret double agent for a rogue CIA black-ops division. If you are his daughter you find this out when he shots out the enemy in front of your face.Love it.

I have no idea what my choice says about me.... or about my Dad. Hmmmm?

Whose your favorite TV Dad? Share in the comments or head on over to Danielle's to link up!

List Love Book Club: Where'd you go?

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Bookwith a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today's Topic: List people that make you think, where are they now?

A few years ago this list would've been much longer. I would've been asking myself what happened to my childhood best-friend Malia and my childhood boyfriend Jordan Knight were up to. Thanks to social media I don't really have to ask those questions: Malia is more beautiful then ever and Jordan and I have rekindled our imaginary relationship via twitter. There are however just a few people that I still wonder about...

  1. My high school spanish teacher: She was worked hard and really went above and beyond for her students. I knew that she truely loved and cared for us and the importance of that to teenagers just can't be measured. I wish I knew where she was because I know she would be so proud that I went on to get a M.A. in Spanish.
  2. So You Think You Can Dance contestants- I geek out so hard on dancers, I always wonder what they are up to after they win those award shows.
  3. My Dad-No JUST KIDDING! I know exactly where my dad is, he's watching TV with cashews in hand or outside working. :) Just messing with you.

So who do you wonder about? Inquiring Listographers want to know. Share in the comments or head over to Torrie's to link up!

List Love Book club: I heart my Home

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Bookwith a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today's Topic: List why You Love Your Country

For me one of the unexpected side benefits of studying abroad was that I learned how to be an American. I know that sounds strange, but I grew up in the liberal Bay Area where there is so much diversity of culture that it was really hard to say what was "American" or not. Before I went abroad, I saw politics as the definition of our country but now I see the US as so much more than policymakers decisions.

Here's why I love the US:

  1. First off? Because it's my home. After the Haiti earthquake, so many people turned to me and said "Why don't they leave?" And I said "Because it's their home!" Most people love their home country, I'm no exception.
  2. Public School System: I'm sure lots of people are going to think this is a weird one but hear me out. Even though our school system has massive failures we still have a lot to be proud of. In most of Latin America only the poorest of children go to public schools because the education quality is so bad, and many times it is a major burden on their families because they are not provided with free textbooks. One of my best friends teaches in the lowest-income schools in Sacramento. She works her ass off for those kids ever year and there are thousands of teachers across the nation who do the same. Our public school system is one of the reasons that our ever-widening wealth disparity is not greater. It is something to protect and be proud of instead of fleeing for private education.
  3. Freedom of Speech: Duh
  4. Diversity: I grew up in immigrant households, not just with my family but with the families of my friends. The country I studied abroad in was very homogeneous, it was an interesting experience but I missed being around lots of different kinds of people. I need my tacos people.
  5. Democracy: I went to China back in 2008. It was an amazing experience but it was also the first time I'd been to a non-democratic country. The lack of power that people had over their lives in terms of choosing how large their family was to be and what religion they chose to practice was truly alarming to me. I'm grateful that I have the right to make those choices for myself.
  6. Produce: I love that I can go to the farmer's market, pick up good produce and a reasonable price, wash it and feel 99% certain that I am not going to get food borne illness. lt's a luxury that the US provides for me everyday.

How about you? What do you like about your home country? I've got the link!

List Love Book Club: Cake Break

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Bookwith a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today's Topic: List your favorite snacks

A better question is "What don't I like to snack on?" Are you with me people! My favorite snack is a cake break. It's delicious and it rhymes. Cake Breaks are best enjoyed in moderation though so today I'll tell you my healthy snack secrets. I work in an office and around 3 we all start falling head first into our computers unless we get a snack.

  1. Almonds in Packets (200 calories per pack, perfect for staving off the 3 o'clock dip). Blue Diamond makes great spiced varieties and Trader Joes sells them in convenient snack packs.
  2. Any trail mix from Trader Joes. I'm partial to the ones with pb chips in it.
  3. Tuna-fish packs. They have these in our vending machine and while they are a lunch more than a snack, they are healthy and delicioussssssssss
  4. Hummus with anything
  5. Fresh fruit

Okay that's what I'm eating, on non-cake days.  What are you chewing on? Head on over to Danielle's or share in the comments!

List Love Book Club-Smelly Cat

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Bookwith a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today’s Topic: List your least favorite smells

I haven't ever had a good sense of smell, which I blame on the a-a-a-a-all-ergies so this was a little challenging for me. Lots of thing smell bad, but what is it that I just can't stand?

  1. Potty-Training Laundry: The opposite of fun. While I am dealing with this I repeat "It won't be like this forever" over and over again.
  2. Sour towel smell. Blech.
  3. Skunks-Our battles against the skunks were well documented when I started this blog. We were so up close and personal with our skunk that we named him Valentino but don't let that friendly name fool you. We had to euthanize Valentino and I will do the same to anybody else that sprays toxic gunk all over my house.

How about you? Anybody almost smell free like me due to allergies? Torrie's got the link!

List Love Book Club: The office

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Bookwith a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today's Topic: List the most memorable co-worker from your past

When I started brainstorming this list my mind immediately gravitated towards all the yahoos that have annoyed me during my time in the professional world. I thought of the warehouse worker that sexually harassed me during my time as a temp worker and the supervisor who told me I should be more understanding of said warehouses workers feeling when I complained about the aforementioned harassment. I thought of the co-worker who baby-talked to his wife everyday on the phone within earshot and then numerous people who would claim to have "lost" important e-mails I sent them. But then I thought, no, I don't want to list all those characters, that kind of idiocy is best left at the office.

Today I want to list just one person, she is the most memorable because she annoyed me so much that I put up a bookcase between our desks so I wouldn't have to look at her. She called it "The Great Wall of Emily".  She was loud, over-enthusiastic, and wore mini-skirts with rainbow socks to work. Also she called avocados, avo. In short, she annoyed me. A lot.

I literally asked my bible study to pray for me to get through the situation. True story.

Prayers must've worked because eventually she became one of my good friends.  Somewhere along the way, our differences became the glue that brought us together and instead of perserverating on everything she did wrong I got the memo and dug the plank out of my eye. We've been friends for a decade now and she will always be my most memorable co-worker because when I look at her I see how my own narrow-mindedness almost caused me to miss out on one of the kindest, most fun people I know. Nowadays I try not to make the same mistake twice.

Who do you remember the most and why? I've got the link!

List Love Book Club: TV Moms

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through theListography 2011 Bookwith a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today's Topic: List your favorite TV Moms

I thought this would be an easy list, especially given the exorbitant amount of TV that I watch but it proved somewhat challenging. It seems like TV Moms are really often portrayed unsympathetically. As Jen Aniston would say "That is so uncool."

The Goofballs: Lucy Ricardo from I love Lucy and Kitty from That 70s Show. I love people who are silly and I have more than a little bit in common with Lucy and her fast-talking Cuban husband.

The Moderns:I loooooooove Gloria and Claire from Modern Family. Once a friend told me "I really appreciate that you never try to fool people into making motherhood look easy." That is exactly how I feel about Claire. She lives in her perfect house with her not-so-perfect family and is utterly charming in her nuerosis. Gloria loves her weirdo kid, just as he is, something we can all aspire to.

Whose your favorite TV Mom? Link up over at Danielle's or leave it in the comments!

List Love Book Club: Friendship Qualifications

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through theListography 2011 Book with a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above.

Today’s Topic: List the qualities you look for in a friend

You know what, truthfully I am not that picky about friends. I don't look for particular qualities, I have more of an 'innocent until proven guilty" attitude about people. I assume people are great friend material until they prove otherwise which is why I don't have qualities I look for per se. Instead I compiled a list of qualities that my friends have. I have the MOST AMAZING FRIENDS IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD so this list will definitely be gushy.

  1. Good listeners-I could call my friend Justina every, single day if I wanted to and she would always be there with a listening ear. To be embarrassingly honestly during some times in my life I have called her on daily basis. That girl is as solid as a rock.
  2. Forgiving-I may suck at forgiveness myself but I'm not perfect (shocking! I know!) so I do well with people who are forgiving. My friend Lisa is really good at forgiving, she doesn't pretend to forgive you and hold a grudge. She gets mad and then lets things go. I look to her as an example.
  3. Generous-My friend Dahlia is not only currently spending most of her weekend watching her husband teach my husband how to build our deck but she also comes over with cookies on the regular. She's also been making me lemon squares for almost two decades.
  4. Won't run away when things get rough-My friend Debi and I sometimes fight as if we are actually related but when things get touch, I always end up running to her house, throwing myself on her couch and spewing tears all over her throw pillows. IN fact, I actually have my own key so I can literally run away to her house whenever I want and I know the door is always open for me there.
  5. Serve as a Personal D.A. against your crazy-My friend Emily is not only my partner in crime for all things bloggy she is also my own personal defense attorney. When I'm doubting myself she comes up with opening and closing statements that would put her actual lawyer sister to shame. She is so convincing with the pep talks that by the time she's done I feel sorry for my personal demons, they've received quite the ass-kicking.
  6. Encourager-My friend Betty consistently sends me random e-mails at odd hours of the night to give me bizarre compliments. Last week she wrote me the following "Last week I did a post-church hike...and stopped at Safeway to get sandwiches and drinks.  I picked a Gatorade...flavor was "fierce melon"...and I said, "fierce, like Emily"...so that word is associated with you!"
  7. Food lovers-My friend Marilyn brings me food, like ALL THE TIME. We work together and sometimes she just shows up with cake, which is why we call her the cake fairy. I honestly can't think of one close friend I have that isn't crazy in love with good food. I'm not sure what this says about me, but there you go!
  8. Reliable-I'll make this my last one, but here's the thing: A true friend is always there for you. They are there when times are good and when times were bad. My friends are there to celebrate the good times and they've held my hand in the hard times. Over the past year as I learned to be a Mom I had pretty much nothing to give to anybody around me. I have often been so tired and overwhelmed as to be considered a comatose zombie and through it all my friends were there. I hope that each of you are so lucky to have friends who reach the same standard.

Wow, I think I filled my quota of gushy! So, tell me, what do you guys look for in a friend? Leave 'em in the comments or head over to Torrie's to link up!

List Love Book Club: Earth Day EveryDay

Each Week ElleinadspirA Place to Share and I will be working our way through theListography 2011 Book with a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today's Topic: List some ideas for earth friendly living

Yay! Tips for clean living and a list all rolled up in one. Perfect. Just a warning though, I feel what my family deems my "agressive" voice coming on.

  1. My first and most important tip would be to eat less meat overall. It's extremely hard on the environment to eat the amount of meat we do in the United States. Don't get me wrong Casa Perez residents are super-carne fans, but we love people more and destroying the environment is bad for people. In our house the rule of thumb is not to buy meat unless it's for a Rick Bayless recipe. That way whenever we go out to eat ordering meat feels like a superspecial treat! As a bonus, not buying meat saves us enough grocery budget to buy high quality local organic produce. #winning!
  2. Compost-Okay, I actually don't do this, but it's supposed to be crazy effective in terms of reducing Co2 emissions so it's on my LIST!
  3. Rags-It's so easy to cut up and old towel and use them to clean up spills instead of using one billion paper towels.
  4. Break your napkin addiction-Let's be real. Are we pigs? Cause unless we are not every meal needs a napkin. I am one of the sloppiest eaters I know and I don't need them unless it's ribs or tacos or other finger foods. I'm just saying! Think it through.
  5. Water Bottles-There is absolutely no reason to waste money on plastic water bottles. By a reusable one or ten, fill 'em up and stick in your fridge. You'll save yourself money and exposure to plastic bottle chemicals.

Alright, I'm getting all apoplectic just thinking about plastic water bottles swimming around in the ocean so I'll cut myself off before I turn all green. What are your tips? Are mine too simple? Too drastic? Just right? Share your wisdom! I've got the link.

Where do I even start? Romantic comedies and I are practically in a domestic partnership I love them so much! There is no question it is my absolute favorite genre. Even more absurd is that I love the high school romantic comedies the best. What's that about?
  1. Amelie
  2. Bridget Jones
  3. Pride and Prejudice (any version)
  4. Clueless
  5. 10 Things I hate about You
  6. LOVE ACTUALLY!
  7. About a Boy
  8. When Harry met Sally (duh!)
  9. Clueless
  10. Bring it On
  11. 13 Going on 30

Okay, with tremendous self-discipline and willpower I will hold myself back from listing another 50 movies. What's your favorite? Head over to Danielle's to link up or leave it in the comment!

I think for the very first time in my life I do not have Spring Break dreams! That's because in the past five weeks I've been to LA twice as well as traveling for work to Baltimore, Fresno and Oakland. Of course theoretically I would love to go to any of the multiple exotic locales listed on my Mighty Life List, but for now? My dream is to sit down on my couch, with my puppy, a jar of peanutbutter and Season 3 of True Blood.

What's on your spring break wishlist? I want to know! Head on over to Torrie's and share with the world.

3. Candyland!

4. Charlie's Chocolate Factory-The chocolate fountain. Enuff said.

Okay, well my list seems to be leaning strongly towards children's fiction and candy-based places. Danielle has the link today. I can't wait to see what you picked!

Each Week Elleinadspir, A Place to Share and I will be working our way through the Listography 2011 Book with a rotating Link Part-tay! To find the list of the years topics, check out the Listography Link above. Today’s Topic: List cocktails you've tried

My body is not the best at processing alcohol so I don't drink much. It can be dissapointing sometimes, but on the upside I can remember very clearly which cocktails I've had because they are such a rarity for me!

  1. Pisco Sour-I had my first one at a very fancing wedding while studying abroad in Chile. It was still the best Pisco Sour I've ever had. They are not often on the menu but if you have a chance to get a good one, make sure to go for it! Bay Area locals can get a good one at Mochica in the city.
  2. Mojito-Also, had this for the first time in Chile (are you sensing a theme?). We used to frequent a Cuban club called Ile Havana in Santiago and my friend Eudys was in the band. The mojito was ca-razy strong. Halfway through the drink I was hugging Eudys bear-like whilst babbling about the greatness that is Cuba.
  3. Chocolate Martini-Hands down this is still my favorite drink, because I like chocolate. Duh. They are delicious.
  4. Margarita-Who hasn't had a margarita? I recall having many in Panama with my family.
  5. Fantachop-This is not so much a cocktail as a mix, of... beer and Fanta. This is the cheap drink of choice in Chile. Brilliant! All that world-class wine and I was drinking Fanta and Beer. Hah!
  6. Basil Gimlet-Honestly, I'm still not quite sure what's in a gimlet... but I'm sure it's good.

What about you guys? I can't be the only one who was busy getting an alcohol education in a foreign land, right? Share your list with the group over at Torrie's. I'll meet you there!
