Weekend Update #54-Bay to Breakers

One of my New Years Resolutions was to run Bay to Breakers. Check! We ran on Sunday and it was absolutely beautiful. We had so much fun and I'm still on a high. One of my co-workers commented that I seemed euphoric. I guess having fun will do that to you.

I'm giddy to share about our weekend of "Big Eating" and running... but seeing as I still have a tax audit to deal with, it'll be awhile.

As the bloggers say "le sigh". Until then, here's a sneak preview of things to come!

Weekend Update #52-Big Deal Weekend Edition

I'm a little late on weekend update, but as you all know it was a big weekend. I needed some time to digest Sunday's unexpected news regarding Bin Laden's death. For me it brought on a lot of complicated emotions and hard memories. I was mulling over writing a post about it, but honestly for me, it was too big to blog. Others were better able to tackle my thoughts and feelings and I think Becc said it perfect: it's complicated. Thankfully her eloquence gives me the freedom to move to the much lighter events of a weekend that I very much enjoyed. First off, I have to let you know that I am once again "internet famous" having been given the opportunity to toss around superlatives in an interview about my feelings regarding the closing of a favorite local business "La Bonne Soup". In summary? I was sad, very sad. My devastation turned to jubilation the next morning however when I cheered on my rockstar husband who ran the American River Parkway Marathon in less than two hours! I was so proud, he is a superhero.

Running(or spectacting) is exhausting so we were forced to stuff our faces later that day at Sactomofo, our cities first annual Mobile Food Cart Festival.

I live a hard life, I know. I suffer.

And after all of that? The crown jewel of the weekend: our royal wedding tea party. Like all lukewarm royal-watchers I got my friends together for high tea and a wedding viewing a mere three days after the actual event. With no boys over the age of four allowed we indulged in sentimental weepiness, crazy hats and tiny sandwiches. It was decided we should make it an annual event. I look forward to explaining to Elian why his Mom's crazy-old-lady friends are celebrating strangers' wedding a decade from now.

Weekend Update #51-Spring Break Edition

We took advantage of Arnold's spring break last week to visit my family in Southern California. There were beach visits, blogger meet-ups, wine-tasting and all manner of things wonderful. Smitten grandparents who are more than happy to entertain a high-energy toddler were defenitely the prescription for first-time parents running on fumes. I've always thought that the suburb my family lives in is boring, but through Elian's eyes everything becomes magical. Even the 25 mph in front of my parents community is cause for celebration.

Viva la Spring Break y que viva la 25!

Weekend Update #48

On Saturday we hosted a fun shindig for my friend Debi's 32nd berfday. Elian was enthusiastic if confused about the situation. When our friend Emily left he ran up to her, wrapped his hands around her neck, looked deep in her eyes and said quite sincerely "Happy Birthday!". I almost didn't want to correct him, it was so frigging cute.

Confusion about birthday ownership aside the party was quite the success. Everybody brought delicious food, but the crowning glory were Betty's bacon-wrapped shrimp. When she pulled them out of the oven, my friend Lisa gasped and said "Take a picture, that is so weekend update material."

I ate approximately 10 zillion of them, you know just to make sure they were up to blog standards.

They were indeed weekend update material.

Weekend Update #47

In a strange (yet not uncommon) fit of house rearranging fury I moved all our art and furniture around in preparation for our impending living room makeover. Elian assisted by busting out his fake tools and helpfully pointing out that mine are big and his are little. Big and Little has always been a trouble spot for me so luckily he was there to clear things up. As expected I'm rife with indecision and decorating angst, which I believe is the explicit defenition of #whitegirlproblems. All neurosis aside I am very excited about implementing AB's ideas and a few of mine as well! To prep I moved a lot of stuff around and borrowed a mirror and some lamps from another room to serve as stand-ins for the mirror/sconces. The mirror I used is quite a bit smaller than the size I'm looking for some I really excited to see how dramatic the actual mirror we choose will be. My hope is to thrift one that is one of a kind/economical, let me know if you guys have any hot tips.

Weekend Update #44

Over the weekend we went to visit my Grandma. And while we were there we went to Dragon 2000. Dragon is "our" restaurant. And by our, I don't mean my and Arnold's, although we did eat lunch there with my family right after we got married. By "our" I mean me, my Grandma and Arnold's restaurant. Every time we visit my Grandma  we go with her to "The Dragon". We've been going there together so long that we remember when the Year "2000" was still the future.

The three of us have spent so much time together at that restaurant, laughing, eating and teasing each other. Once we even sat there for 3 hours while eating the most epic Chinese banquet ever ordered. Now that Elian has joined the family, the four of us go. He doesn't yet understand the wonder that is honey walnut prawns or crab rangoon but I'm delighted to report that my little one is progressing quite well in understanding the Dragon: last Saturday of his own accord he started using chopsticks to shovel rice into his mouth like a pro. You guys! He's not even 3 years old yet!?

I won't lie. I can barely contain my pride.

Happy Valentine's Day to each of you. May your life be filled with magical moments at Chinese restaurants with the ones you love!

Weekend Update #41-Arnold's B-Day Edition

Arnold would like you all to know that he celebrated his 15th B-Day this weekend when his amazing wife threw him a suprise birthday party on Saturday. We had a "Breakfast for Dinner" party filled with all sorts of deliciousness. I highly suggest that you have one yourself one day. I will warn you though that Breakfast-for-Dinner parties end up being the sort of parties where you start eating bacon because it seems like a healthy choice.

PS-Tomorrow is List Love Book Club! For the topics click the Listography link at the top of the page.

Weekend Update #39

This year in lieu of buying gifts we decided to throw a big Christmas party for our friends. Now usually when I say "party" it's a "bring some food to my house" kinda party because I am not the kind of cook who can handle multiple dishes. Or I should say I wasn't the kind of cook who handled mutliple dishes. Yesterday we turned our house into a taqueria and dished out Rick Bayless' best for 30 of our nearest and dearest friends. I'm pretty freaking proud that everything was warm, done on time an delicious so I won't bother with false humility. We had a party, I cooked all the food and it rocked!
